Perfectly set in a remote and secluded part of the Matusadona National Park and boasting nearly 4km of lakeshore frontage, Changa Safari Camp offers a unique and authentic safari experience.  There are a varied range of exciting and relaxing activities to choose from including both morning and afternoon game drives, fishing for the famed fighting Tiger fish and stunning game walks on the concession with an experienced and knowledgeable guide.

Lapped by the waters of Lake Kariba, shaded by Mopane woodland and hidden from the world, Changa Safari Camp is an oasis of tranquility and an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Changa has been designed to blend in with the environment using natural materials. The camp  furniture has been built using Zimbabwe’s finest teak and the bar has been fashioned around the hull of an old boat.

Changa offers the ultimate in relaxation in a unique and unspoiled environment. Whether relaxing in camp or spending time on the magnificent Lake Kariba you will witness the passing parade of animals and birds as they go about their business living in their natural state. 

Whether you are a photographic enthusiast or a ‘holiday snapper’ you will be presented with many an opportunity to capture some special moments such as Kariba’s famed sunsets, lake scenes, animal close-ups or bird life.

Animal species include elephants, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, zebras, leopard and buffalo whilst bird sightings will likely include the magnificent fish eagle, ospreys, saddlebilled storks and a variety of herons.

Accommodation

There are 6 standard tents which accommodate 2 people. The camp also has two sets of interconnecting family tents, which allow children to move freely between their tent and their parents’ in complete safety and privacy.

Each one of the eight luxury tents has been created to reflect the environment, providing you with an authentic bush experience. The unique landscape surrounding Changa, provides each tent with its own breathtaking view of the unspoilt environment. Discreetly positioned in the front facing trees, are small sprinklers that may be turned on, inviting a flurry of feathers to your doorstep where you can watch the colourful bird life darting in and out the spray.

All tents are a classic safari olive canvas and have been mosquito proofed with specialized netting, allowing you to comfortably fall asleep with a gentle breeze and the distant call of the wild.

Airport

Air Zimbabwe flies into Kariba airport three days a week.

Changa Safari Camp can also be accessed by light aircraft.

Flying in over Lake Kariba is something truly incredible, leaving you with a clear idea of just how vast the lake is and conjuring up magical stories of what lies underneath the depth of blue waters. You will enjoy views of the rugged Matusadona mountain terrain, outcroppings of islands, a sea of white trees jutting out of the glass like water and herds of elephants grazing on the new shoots of green grass on the shorelines.

There are several chartered flight options from Harare, Hwange, Mana Pools and Victoria Falls. Our preferred suppliers are Safari Logistics, Alt Air and Wilderness Air.

Chartered flights will land at either Fothergill Island or Kariba Airport (weather depending) where your safari holiday will begin with a warm welcome by the Changa team.

Car

Transfers and Road Travel

Whether flying into Kariba airport or Fothergill Island you will be met with a warm welcome by the Changa team.

You will then either enjoy a scenic 15-minute game drive to the camp from Fothergill Island or a 45-minute boat cruise from Kariba’s Marineland Harbour.

By Road:

If you are travelling from Harare by road it will take you approximately 4 hours (370 km) to get to Kariba, where you will meet the boat transfer at the Marineland Harbour and complete your journey with a 45-minute boat trip across the lake. It is recommended that you book this in advance which we can assist with.

Self-Drive directly into Changa Safari Camp is another option but only if you have a 4WD.

For visitors who are self-driving through Zimbabwe, whether you come from Victoria Falls or Harare, there is a journey that takes you across the length of Lake Kariba – 1250km.

This is a 24-hour boat ride where you can sit back, relax and take in the views with your vehicle travelling safely with you. The Kariba Ferry runs on set departures and this must be planned and booked in advance.

Location & Attractions

Changa Safari Camp is located in the Matusadona National Park on the South East bank of Lake Kariba which borders Zambia.

The camp is approximately a 45 minute boat trip from Kariba airport or a fifteen minute game drive from Fothergill Island.

If you are travelling from Harare by road it will take you approximately 4 hours (370 km) to get to Kariba, where you will meet the boat transfer at the Marineland Harbour and complete your journey with a 45-minute boat trip across the lake. It is recommended that you book this in advance which we can assist with.

Without doubt the major attractions of being at Changa are the lake and National Park.

A visit to the Kariba Dam wall is recommended prior to leaving for Changa or on your return to Kariba.

There are several activities at Changa Safari Camp, providing guests with a choice of how they wish to spend their day. From early morning game walks, fishing for the famed fighting tiger fish and photographing wildlife whilst on a game drive – these are just a few of the adventures on offer.

For those that want to take some time out to relax, you do not have to venture too far from camp to see wildlife as there are regular visitors including elephants, bush babies, monkeys, squirrels and on the rare occasion, a resident leopard.

Wildlife

Animals:

Animals include: elephant, buffalo, night ape, honey badger, civet, small spotted genet, slender mongoose, banded mongoose, spotted hyaena, wild cat, lion, leopard, yellow spotted dassie, black rhinoceros, zebra, warthog, common duiker, grysbok, klipspringer, waterbuck, bushbuck, scrub hare, porcupine, vervet monkey, chacma baboon, side-striped jackal, hippopotamus, roan antelope, kudu and bush squirrel.

Some of the more elusive species include: clawless otter, white-tailed mongoose, reedbuck, sable antelope, eland, civet, rusty spotted genet, caracal and bush pig.

Also present but only sighted are: wild dog, cheetah, roan and pangolin

Birds: 

Over 240 species of birds have been recorded in the park:

These include: grey herons, goliath herons, great white herons, saddlebill storks, plovers, waders, geese, osprey, woolly-necked storks, open-billed storks, white-winged plovers, Kittlitz’s Plover and Caspian Plover is often seen in the summer months. Red-winged pratincoles, Curlew Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Ruff, Common Greenshank and Little Stint are all common.
